What is a Gaeltacht Service Town?

A Gaeltacht service town is a town with a population of at least 1,000 that is located in, or near to, a Gaeltacht language planning area, and that has a significant role in providing social, economic and leisure services to people within that area.

There are sixteen Gaeltacht service towns in total, three situated in a Gaeltacht area and thirteen outside the Gaeltacht. Údarás na Gaeltachta or Foras na Gaeilge, as appropriate, is responsible for supporting an organization in the preparation and implementation of language plans in the Gaeltacht service towns.
