Castlebar has a population of around 12,000 people. It serves the Gaeltacht communities of Dúiche Sheoigheach agus Tuar Mhic Éadaigh, Mhaigh Eo Thiar and Mhaigh Eo Thuaidh.
Gnó Mhaigh Eo was appointed as lead organisation for the language planning process in the town along with a language planning steering committee made up of community groups and other local representatives. Early in 2022 a draft language plan was sent to the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media for approval and received this approval in July 2022.
