With almost 80,000 residents, Galway City is the third largest city in Ireland. According to the latest census 41.4% of those residents can speak Irish and the city is very close to many Gaeltacht areas such as Bearna & Cnoc na Cathrach, An Bruach Thóir and Claregalway. It also provides many services to the nearby Connemara Gaeltacht areas which are home to organisations such as TG4, Raidió na Gaeltachta and many more.

Galway City is home to a number of long-established organisations that promote the Irish language including Gaillimh le Gaeilge, Áras na nGael and An Taidhbhearc.
