On 19th June a meeting of the Local Authority Language Planning Forum was held at the LGMA offices in Dublin. The forumn consists of the Chief Executive Officers of the local authorities in which a language planning process is taking place (ie. an area that has either an Irish Language Network, a Gaeltacht Service Town or a Gaeltacht Language Planning Area as part of it). Foras na Gaeilge and Údarás na Gaeltachta act as joint chairs of this forum, which gives an opportunity to local authorities to discuss common issues on language planning and to explore opportunities for co-operation in order to support the process.
During this meeting, the Manager of Áras Chrónáin Brian Ó Gáibhín spoke on the importance of Irish language centres and the opportunities they provide to the Irish language community.
Following this, the Minister for Rural Development and Communities and the Gaeltacht Dara Calleary spoke with the forum and discussed a wide range of issues relating to the Irish language, housing matters, language planning and the provision of services through the medium of Irish in local authorities.
