Letterkenny is home to almost 20,000 people and almost 7,000 of those have some level of Irish according to the most recent census. Letterkenny is the largest town in County Donegal and because of how large it is and where it is situated many people from the surrounding Gaeltacht Language Planning Areas visit the town for a range of services that are available in Letterkenny. Therefore, although statistics show that 2.87% of people in the town use the Irish language on a daily basis outside of the education system, the figure is actually much higher when the amount of visitors from surrounding Gaeltacht areas is included on their daily or weekly visits.

There are two Irish-medium schools in Letterkenny, Gaelscoil Adhmhanáin and Coláiste Ailigh. Irish language classes take place in a range of locations in the town including the Líonra Leitir Ceanainn, the ETB, Cara House, CLG Naomh Adhmhanáin agus Gaeil Leitir Ceanainn.
